The coastline of the island is approximately 87 km. The area is 281 km. As of July 2006, the population was 69,000. It is not only one of the largest Lesser Antilles, but also one of the most economically prosperous, thanks to the developed tourism, offshore banks and the gaming industry.
The island is home to the capital of Antigua and Barbuda - St. John's, where more than 31,000 people live. It is located in the northwest of Antigua, on the coast of the harbor, which is capable of receiving large cruise ships. The entrance to the bay is protected by a fort. VC Bird International Airport is located near the capital. According to the 2001 census, other cities with a relatively large number of inhabitants: Ol Sents - 3412 people, Liberta - 2239 people
The island has a tropical climate with little seasonal temperature fluctuations. The island is composed mainly of coral limestones. The high coastal cliffs are cut by many coves and narrow bays, some of which form good harbors. The surface of the island is relatively flat, (some hilly is observed in its southwestern part) - there is no mountain range, as in most other Caribbean islands
